I recently lost one of my 8 month old Koi Angelfishes to Fin Rot. I tried to quarantine him for a couple of weeks and for a while he seemed on the road to recovery after I gave him daily dosages of Methylene Blue.
Here he is inside my 2.5 gallon quarantine tank:
Note the greatly reduced Dorsal, Caudal and Anal fins.
I returned him to the community tank after I noticed that the jagged edges on his wasting fins are becoming more blunt and the spread of the rot has stopped. I continued the daily dosage of Methylene Blue on the community tank and apart from apparent struggles with swimming I thought he was mostly okay since he still came up to the surface during feeding time and took a bite or teo of the Sera Pond Flakes.
After a couple of weeks though, I noticed that he was mostly keeping to himself and hiding in the shadows behind the Echinodorus and the Driftwood. I also noticed that another Koi Angel has developed the exact same fin rot on its its fins. It started as a white spot on the trailing edge of the dorsal and tail fin. I wanted to try chemical treatments like Melafix or Pimafix I was but I was afraid those would kill my plants and Trumpet Snails. Soon, the last two of my Platinum angels died in succession, with their fins intact. However I noticed small flesh wounds on the head of one of them which made me suspect it was due to aggression but I did not rule out bacteria/fungi. In a span of 3 months, I lost 3 angelfishes, Orm the Red Betta, My dwarf Gourami and one of my 7 Black Skirt Tetras.
I have a full blown epidemic right under my nose so I went back to basics and stopped buying new fish. After that I did 10-15% water changes weekly. Before that, I did 50% water changes every month or so. I still have one sick Koi Angel that need to be rehabilitated but this time I did not isolate it. Also I switched from SERA pond flakes to the more expensive TetraMin fish food which was 190 PHP for a 20g container (see below).
After that, I noticed that my fishes were no longer lethargic and uninterested in eating. This time, they attacked the flakes like hungry piranhas. I fed them small servings 5-7 times a day but they kept begging for food it was absolutely crazy.
Best thing if all they grew exponentially and the Fin Rot afflicted Angel began to heal and recover rather quickly. Here are my ravenous angels in a feeding frenzy:
